For our current social studies unit, the Chinchillas are learning all about 'Cultural Identity and Diversity.' To better understand the meaning of "culture", the Chinchillas have each been researching their own countries of cultural origin. The students are researching countries from all around the globe! One Chinchilla is researching Italy, and to delve deeper into the Italian culture, the Chinchillas visited Manetta's Restaurant in Long Island City. Manetta's is a renowned Italian restaurant that is owned and operated by our Class Representative, Lisa Manetta-Negrette.
After a short bus ride across the Queensboro Bridge, the Chinchillas arrived in Long Island City. They first built up their appetites by playing at a neighborhood park before walking down the street to Manetta's.
Lisa, her family, and the rest of the Manetta's family welcomed The Chinchillas into their establishment with open arms. Each student donned a white apron and a chef hat as they made their own personal pizzas (complete with each child's choice of yummy toppings!) and received a lesson on how to handmake ravioli from Lisa's mother, "Nonna".
Next, Chinchilla students, teachers, therapists, and parent chaperones took their seats at the best table in the house where they enjoyed multiple courses of delicious Italian cuisine. Sitting together and sharing a delicious meal that was made together gave the Chinchilla family a genuine taste of Italian culture, as well as quite a few tastes of Italian dessert...
Take a look at these pictures from the field trip. The Chinchillas give Manetta's Restaurant a five-star rating, and "wish there could be a Manetta's field trip every day"!
